Use these fun activities for back to school time and getting to know your students better!
1. The Cool Bean
A really great way to begin a new year is with a book! I chose The Cool Bean because it's a really awesome conversation starter about interacting with others. This would be good for your small groups, as well as whole class lessons for any elementary or middle school students. You can also pair it with these activities to extend learning!
2. Turkey Goes to School
The Turkey series by Wendi Silvano is one of my favorites and the kids always love them. This would be a fun choice to use at the beginning of the year because Turkey and his friends are trying to sneak into school with Farmer Jake's kids. Lots of great ideas to go with this one (that you could also use with the other Turkey books too!), check them out HERE.
3. Conversation Starters
Conversation starters are a great way to get to know your students! I love using these with a game like Jenga or physical activity like throwing a bean bag, but also they are perfect on their own. If you pair them with another game, you can just have the cards in a pile and have your students draw one card and answer the question before their turn. Grab these freebies HERE and HERE!
4. No Prep Worksheets
Let's be honest, at the beginning of the year, you have to collect some baseline data. I really like to use these worksheets to do so or to use as an independent activity while I work with each student in the group to collect data on specific goals. They always make great therapy activities!
5. August Open-Ended Games
Open-ended games are really one of my favorite activities to use in therapy because I can target just about any goal with them! These make a great activity to do with conversation starters, if you are collecting data on specific goals, or just as a fun game to play.
