January is FINALLY over, and I am excited to talk about books to use this month! Valentine's Day seems to be the popular theme for February, but there are lots of other great topics to cover: Groundhog Day, Black History Month, Presidents Day, and Lunar New Year are all in the month of February. I've got a few book suggestions to share with you today, hopefully you will find a new one to add to your list!
Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History by Vashti Harrison
This book covers 40 amazing women who have made important contributions to the world. They are almost like mini biographies for each woman, so of whom include Maya Angelou and Katherine Johnson. Not only does it give great information, but the illustrations are incredible! You can use this book to tie in nonfiction texts, working on answering WH questions, describing each of the women, character traits for success, compare/contrast, and so much more.
Let the Children March by Monica Clark-Robinson,
Illustrated by Frank Morrison
This is a powerful book told from the point of view of a child who experienced the 1963 march in Birmingham, Alabama. The story demonstrates the things these children went through during that time, from fire hoses being sprayed to time in jail. The illustrations in the book are absolutely amazing, and the story is very thought provoking. I think this choice is perfect for your intermediate students and will create good discussions on this important historical event. This book would be great for some of the higher level language skills, problem solving, inferencing, and perspective taking.
Ruby's Chinese New Year by Vickie Lee, Illustrated by Joey Chou
This book is about a little girl, Ruby, who is going to see her grandmother and give her the card she made for Chinese New Year. Along the way she meets all of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac! The illustrations are whimsical and the story line is easy to follow. This book would be great for explaining the traditions behind the Chinese Zodiac animals, plus working on animal vocabulary, sequencing, and narrative skills.
Love Monster by Rachel Bright
SO, I think I am late to the Love Monster party, but I seriously just discovered this sweet story this year. Shocker, right? This story isn't a Valentine's one per say, you can use it any time of year because the overall theme is about being yourself and acceptance… which I happen to think is great for February 🙂 This story and illustrations are so cute, but this book also has a ton of great vocabulary in it! There are some naturally occurring opposite pairs, basic concepts, and descriptive words included. Perfect for your littles! I have a no prep companion resource that will make using this book a breeze, you can find it HERE.
The Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond
This story is about a little girl named Cornelia Augusta who uses her creativity to send cards to her friends. Great for working on themes of thinking about others, this story is short and sweet and perfect for Valentine's Day…which it does mention. This one also has great vocabulary, and you could easily make this into a craft/writing lesson by having your students create Valentine's for special people at school or at home! I also have a No Prep Book Companion for this story, you can find it HERE.
I hope that gives you a few new ideas to use this month! If you have any other suggestions, please feel free to leave me a comment, I would love to hear from you!
