Whether you are an SLP or a teacher, you can utilize short stories to support the students you work with. Short stories for kids are a great way to practice important reading skills, like comprehension, vocabulary, and story retell in the classroom. As an SLP, I like using these ideas to collaborate with the teacher or as activities to use during inclusion services when I came into the classroom.
Centers
During center time, it's easy to use these stories for extra practice for comprehension, sequencing, writing sentences, and vocabulary work. To set yourself up for success, you can use the same story each but set up a different story skill each week. As an SLP, I loved pushing into the classroom and centers was such a perfect time to do it. I could pull students into a group and work on whatever we needed to!
You can also utilize the Boom card deck for one of your centers! Boom cards can be used on a tablet or computer and assigned to specific students from your teacher account. Set 1 and set 2 both include audio for the stories, so your students can listen as they read along. This can be helpful for students that are not yet reading independently or for aiding students' reading comprehension skills.
Morning Work
Need something for your students to work on first thing in the morning that is meaningful? Put together a story packet for them to work on throughout the week. Because the format is the same for all of the stories, they will be familiar with what to do each morning so you can get your beginning of the day tasks done!
Early Finishers
If you have students that are always looking for something else to do, these stories make perfect activities. Set up folders in your classroom with story activity packets so students know they can grab them without bothering you. They choose a story and complete the corresponding activity.
Whole Group Instruction
You can use these to introduce a specific skill, such as using transition words in retelling or answering comprehension questions in a complete sentence. Read the story aloud to the whole group, then practice completing the skill together.
Small Group Instruction
Have a small group that is struggling with a specific skill? The differentiated levels make it easy to break it down to the beginning skill and work towards mastery. This is also great for any special education services, like the SLP or support teacher. SLPs can pull a small group with students and work on these
