5 Reasons to Use Boom Cards™ in Speech Therapy

In this day of distance learning, Boom Cards™ have become a hot topic among SLPs who are figuring out speech life from afar. I have to admit, I’ve known about Boom Cards™ for a while but had yet to using any until the past couple of months. But what are they and why are they good for speech therapy? I’m here with a full report.

What are Boom Cards?

Boom Cards™ are web based, interactive lessons created by educators for their students. The folks at Boom Learning offer a free account for ANYONE, so that makes it easy to get signed up and start playing. They also have different levels of membership so you can create classrooms, assign card decks to students, and even keep track of your students progress. There are thousands of decks available on the site, both free and paid. If you purchase cards on the Boom site, then they use points. Don’t want to fool with that? Don’t worry, most Boom sellers are also listing their card decks on Teachers Pay Teachers.

But why should I use them?

1. Boom Cards™ can be used on computers, tablets, phones, and Smartboards, making them perfect for teletherapy OR in person therapy sessions. For teletherapy, depending on your platform, you can often share the screen with your student and let them interact with the cards. Even if they can’t, you can have them tell you what action to do (hey, look at you targeting more communication!). I will tell you, it’s best to use them on a computer if you are screen sharing, sometimes it can get tricky on tablets!

2. Boom Cards™ save you valuable time because they require no prep! Do I really even need to say anything else about that?!

3. Most decks are self checking, allowing students to receive immediate feedback. You can also use this feature to monitor your students’ progress.

4. You can assign decks to your students to complete independently, making them great for extra practice. There is a ‘fast pin’ option which makes this super easy, it creates a link that you can send to your students and they don’t even need an account.

5. Boom Cards™ are fun!  I’ve been sending them out to my students and they can’t get enough!
