This month I'm bringing you some snowy ideas for your speech therapy room with some easy hands on activities to supplement your speech therapy sessions!
I've told you this before, but I love pairing these simple craft activities to keep students busy and engaged during group sessions. Because they are open ended, you can work on a variety of skills like vocabulary, following directions, spatial concepts, articulation, comprehension, etc. I really like using them with a story we have read so that I can work on individual goals with each student, while still having a main group activity.
First up, if you have a die cut machine at school, grab some construction paper and find those snowflakes or winter animals! This is seriously one of the easiest ‘crafts' because you just cut a bunch of shapes and then have the students glue them to paper or if you're feeling fancy, add them to a ribbon to make a mobile like the snowflake in the picture above. Write words on them related to a story or their goals. This is great for brainstorming vocabulary that go with the season/story/theme you are using and would even be a good pre reading activity to work on background knowledge.
Ripped paper crafts are some of my favorite because they don't require scissors. For this one, I precut some tiny bears on the die cut machine and the cave shape (which really turned out to be half an egg shape) and then gave the kids gray paper to rip and glue on the sheet. You can have them earn the paper by answering questions or practicing a target. This craft goes great with Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman.
Sneezy the Snowman is another winter favorite and I shared this craft over on Instagram yesterday. All you really need is the white paper, students can draw the other elements on the melted snowman. This one would really go with any snowman story, like The Snowman or Snowmen at Night.
The Igloo craft is one that is similar to the cave, just rip or cut a bunch of squares to glue. I think this would be perfect for The Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett or with any Arctic themed activities you might be doing.
Last is a cupful of speech, which is a mug that opens up and you can glue pictures or write words. I like this one to go with Just a Snowman by Mercer Mayer. You could create this one your own by drawing a cup, but I've also got a template available in my January Toolkit.
I hope that gives you an idea or two! I'll be back next week with some ideas for pre-reading activities to engage your students in books š
