5 Travel Theme Speech Therapy Ideas – Plus Freebie

Looking for theme speech therapy ideas? Travel is not one commonly used but is so much fun! In this post, I am sharing 5 different activities for this theme, plus a great freebie! This post contains Amazon Affiliate links.

This week we are packing up and hitting the road!  In our minds 🙂  I was so excited to plan this week’s activities and can’t wait to share them with you!  I’ve got a craft, 2 books, an app, a new product, AND a freebie!

Craft

First up, we need to pack!  My primary friends are making these suitcases and they will be full of their speech sounds.  This one is super easy, just fold some construction paper in half. If you are feeling fancy, cut out some handles.  They look like rainbows, so it’s fun.

Inside, we are gluing pictures with their speech sounds.  I snagged the Jumbo artic book and copied it, but you could also do magazines or ads and have them cut real pictures too.

Books

We seriously have the best media specialist…I love talking to her about books!  She found this for me and I fell in love with the chickens. This book is full of GREAT verbs, adjectives, adverbs…awesome for teaching Tier 2 vocabulary.  Big Chickens Go to Town is about chickens who get lost in town and are introduced to the weird ways people do things there, which is so different from the farm!  It can relate it to traveling because when you go somewhere new, the food is different and the people might be different…great conversation!  I definitely recommend this book, and there are more in the series!

I also like Pig the Tourist by Aaron Blabey! This one is PERFECT for talking about manners when traveling, as it follows rude Pig all over the world.

App

I heart Bamba apps and so do my littles.  We are using Bamba Airport this week for some language fun! I typically like to use these apps with my preschoolers, there are so many possibilities with expanding language, building vocabulary, and listening comprehension!

Structured Activity

This fun resource is a nonfiction, trip planning activity for 12 US landmarks. It even includes REAL photos of each one.  The information cards include some facts about each location.  You can use these to work on all kinds of skills. I included some question cue cards, so your students can work on asking or answering questions about the facts on the information cards.  I predict some excellent discussion practice!

There are describing pages, which have even larger photos on them.  You can pair these with your EET or V/V to work on describing attributes about each place.  Fun fact:  I took the picture of the Grand Canyon myself last summer.  Such a beautiful place, I can’t wait to go back again.

And last is a trip planning page!  Students can choose one of the locations to visit, find it on the map, tell how they will get there, and plan a packing list!  This is a great way to work on those planning skills and executive functioning. We had discussions about the weather in the location and how that might affect how you pack or travel.
