I hope you saw my review of the awesome Preposition Builder app by Mobile Education Store! I am excited to bring you my next review of another one of their great apps… Rainbow Sentences!
Rainbow sentences is a an app designed to target sentence structure. It specifically works on the who, what, where, and why of basic sentence structure using features that address both expressive and receptive language skills.
The welcome screen is much like the other Mobile Education Store apps. This is where you control your player and all the options, as well as move through the app. At the bottom of the screen are your navigation buttons to move around in the student's profile. As you can see, there are many ways to customize for your student's needs. There are 3 different levels with 55 sentences in each.
- Level 1 targets Who and What parts of a sentence
- Level 2 targets Who, What, and Where parts of a sentence
- Level 3 targets Who, What, Where, and Why parts of a sentence
What is great about this app is the visual cues that are used to aid students in choosing the correct structure through color coding. You can choose to color code both lines (the fill in the blanks) and the words, or you can toggle them off.
There is also a link to a video tutorial, which is super helpful! You can watch it HERE
You also have the option to record each of the sentences, which you can choose to save in the student's archive. This is great for monitoring progress!
In each level, students earn puzzle pieces as reward. Once they finish all of the level, their puzzle will be finished!
Each student's performance record is easily accessible by tapping ‘stats'. You can see their progress in each level at the first, second, and third attempts. You also have the option to email this page and show their puzzles.
Here's what I love about Rainbow Sentences:
- Easily linked to Who, What, Where, and Why questions
- Visual cues through color coding, with a hierarchy of support that you control
- Multiple levels addressed
- Corrects for error automatically
- Ability to record and store sentences read by students
- Data collection, with the option to email
- Graphics and voice over are engaging to kids
The only bummer I have found is that there is no group option. It is possible to use this is a group session, you just have to change users for each turn. I used it in a group of 3 and it wasn't too bad….but I would still love to see that as an option in the future!
Rainbow Sentences is available in the iTunes Store for only $7.99.

I love the Story Wheel app for making sentences. Really, any picture card deck comes in handy for grabbing on the run.

I have “Sentence Builder” app but it’s nice to have a variety of different apps and tx materials to keep things from getting monotonous! I also use post-it’s with tap lights for a multisensory approach:)

I like to use index cards. One word per index card. For younger kids, I use cards that make a single sentence. I shuffle them, lay them on the table, and have them put the it in order. For older, I use cards that can make a variety of sentences.
