I got the latest and greatest from Smarty Ears to review for you! I've been using Language Empires with my kiddos the past couple of weeks, so I am excited to share it with yall 🙂
Language Empires reminds me a lot of Syntax City, which I also did a review of. You have a few options from the main menu…
- Visit the City – this is your main game play where you will choose students to work on specific targets that the app will collect data for
- Quick Play – you can use this option to play without selecting students or collecting data
- Support – here you can contact Smarty Ears, find the on Facebook, and watch a video tutorial….I highly recommend watching the tutorial before you do anything!
- Report – this is where all your students' data is stored
- Sound – there is background music that plays and you can toggle it on/off by the button in the bottom right corner
- More apps – use this to read about Smarty Ears' other apps by tapping the button in the upper right hand corner
When you go into “Visit the City” you will find this page, where you will input your students data or import from Therapy Report Center. In the settings, you can change the way questions are displayed, as well as what the app does when the student makes an incorrect choice, and turn audio on/off. For each student profile you can use either their picture, an avatar, or leave it blank. I like to live vicariously through avatars with green hair 🙂
Once you have your players set, you are ready to go play! You can have 5 students using this app at the same time AND they can visit one or more empires! Empires included are:
Inferencing with 2 different levels of play
Which Questions with 2 levels of play
Why Questions with 3 levels of play
How Questions
Figurative Language
Vocabulary with 2 levels of play
Predicting with 3 levels of play
Sequencing with 3 levels of play
Students earn trophies as they work through the different empires, which can be seen in their trophy case. I have found that my kids are super motivated by these!
All of the data is kept in the reports, which give you details about how the students performed each time they have used the app. Super convenient!
What I like…
- Multiple player option, which makes a school SLP's life so much easier
- Data collection
- Targets multiple goals, even for the same user
- Leveling options for many of the skills to increase difficulty as needed
- Student rewards, which can be motivating for kids
- Uses real photos for many stimulus questions
What I would like to see…
- I wish it had an option to read the answers for the students, because I ended up having to do that a lot
Overall, I love it! This app targets a lot of skills that I work on with my students and I am happy to have another tool to use for them. You can find Language Empires in the iTunes store currently on sale for $19.99! Regular price is $29.99.
Do you have Language Empires? What do you like about it?
I was given one copy of this app to review from Smarty Ears. No other compensation was provided. Opinions in the review are mine.

Hi, I was wondering if you knew what age this app is for. I have a 4 and a half year old and I am wanted to know if this is too old for him?
Thank you!

Smarty Ears targeted elementary age kids with this app, so it might be a little high for him.

Ok, thank you! I noticed you have reviewed other apps similar to this one. Do any of them that you know of work for preschoolers?
Thanks for your help!!
Your Web site is great! Great information!
