Looking for ways to use Bear Wants More activities in your speech therapy sessions? These activities will be so fun for your students, they won't even realize they are learning!
Bear Wants More by Karma Wilson is a great story to use in your speech therapy sessions. It goes great with a spring or nutrition theme, as it is about a bear that wakes up from hibernation and he is so hungry! With rhyming text and colorful pictures, your students will love learning with this book.
Sorting foods is a perfect way to extend this story and work on categorization! This activity is included in this book companion for the story and is a great conversation starter about foods. YOu can also use this opportunity to discuss different tastes, favorite foods, and describing attributes.
Feed the Bear is always a fun activity! Kids love ‘feed me' games and you can use anything to feed the bear, like stimulus cards or pictures of foods. I attached the bear head to an empty box I had covered with construction paper, then cut out the space in his mouth. Easy peasy! My students always loved it when I made the munching sound as he ‘ate' the items we fed him. It was super motivating for practice of any skill. Need a bear face? I have one in the book companion AND in this toolkit.
Food Bingo is an open ended game you can use to follow up the story and work on food vocabulary and categories. You can also use it as a reinforcer with questions from the story. You can find it here.
Beware of the Bear is a Goliath game similar to Jumping Jack or Pop the Pig. The kids will roll the dice, which will instruct them to remove items from the bear's picnic basket. Eventually the bear will pop out! You can pair this with any skill, like comprehension questions from the story or articulation practice.
Farmer's Market by Learning Resources is a color sorting game, but you can also use it to work on sorting by category, describing, or pretend play. You can add the foods to a sensory bin and sort them, play grocery store, or have a pretend picnic like the characters in the story!
