Adding to your professional library is just as fun to me as adding to my therapy materials closet…I love going through books and learning new things or reviewing things I forgot. When I first started doing literacy based intervention, it was because I went to a conference about the language-reading connection and was given a book that became one of my most valued resources. Since then, I've added a few to my collection that I want to share with you! There are more than 5 but these are the ones I turn to the most often.
- Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction by Beck, McKeown, Kucan was that first book that I received and you can tell from this picture how much it's loved because of all of the post its! This one really changed the way that I looked at teaching vocabulary, as well as how to collaborate with teachers on vocabulary instruction. In 2017, they released a 2nd edition of this book that is even better! I have the Kindle version of that one, which makes it easy to reference anytime.
2. Speech to Print: Language Essentials for Teachers by Moats is actually written for teachers to help them to better understand the language connection to reading and it really breaks it down…this one is like a mini speech & language foundation. But I love it for SLPs too, it takes what we know about the areas of language and how it relates to literacy.
3. Literacy Based Speech and Language Therapy Activities by Prath and Palafox is probably the most practical book in this list, as you can take it and implement the ideas immediately. It's super easy to read and includes so many great ideas about how to actually use books in therapy. I would encourage everyone to add this to their toolbox!
4. Contextualized Language Intervention by Ukrainetz is slam full of research and ideas. This one is not a light read, it's much more academic, BUT it's still a great resource to pull out. I have not read the entire thing, but the chapters that I keep going back to are super helpful.
Those are my top 4! I would love to hear what resources you have found on this topic that are really helpful or if any of these are your favorites too. Let me know below š
