Do you celebrate holidays in your speech therapy? This can be a touchy subject for some, but I'm excited today to bring you 4 different books series that I LOVE, that have books with both holiday and non holiday themes for the month! I will give this disclaimer… all of the holiday choices are Christmas, I know that many more holidays are celebrated this month than just that. These are just examples, I do hope that if you know of other series books that include other holidays, you'll leave me a comment!
Carl the Dog Series
This dog has got to be the BEST. Also, wordless books are pretty much like gold for SLPs. Carl's Snowy Afternoon and Carl's Christmas are similar in that the baby and Carl are getting into mischief, that no one ever finds out about! Great for inferencing, predicting, narrative skills, describing…the list goes on forever. Perfect books for therapy!
Old Lady Series
If you have hung around me for any period of time that I've been doing CSW, then you already know how much I love this old lady! She has two books you can use this season, one where she swallows a bell and one where she swallows snow. Both are great for working on vocabulary, sequencing, past tense verbs, and predicting. I think pretty much any age of student in elementary school loves these stories! I also have book companions for both, you can find those bundled here but they are also available separately.
Snowmen Series
These sneaky snowmen always delight my students with their fun and games while the world sleeps. These two version are similar, I love that they use rhyming text with very descriptive vocabulary and engaging illustrations. Also, hidden pictures! Snowmen at Christmas includes a snowman Santa and references to the religious aspects of the holiday. If that's not what you're looking for, check out Snowmen at Night that is just as good!
Bear Series
I LOVE Bear! I use his books year round, there's one for every month of the year. These two are both great for December. In Bear Stays Up, his friends are trying to convince him to stay up for the holiday. They decorate, give gifts, and enjoy each other's company…and Santa shows up in the end! In Bear Can't Sleep, he should be start hibernating, but Bear can't seem to go to sleep and his friends are trying all of their tricks to help him. Both are super sweet stories that are perfect for animal lovers, and include rhyming text which is great for phonological awareness skills! I also have book companions for these, you can find the bundle HERE or they are available separately.
Do you have any other series suggestions that offer both holiday and non holiday options?? I would love to hear them in the comments!
If you're looking for other book suggestions throughout the year, make sure you sign up for the CSW Book Club…you'll get a free lesson plan each month!
