So, I’m human. I screw up. I am constantly learning and I certainly recognize that I do not know everything. I don’t pretend to. And I will be first in line to make corrections in my errors and apologize. This is one of those posts. Earlier this week I posted two articulation activities that were titled “Eskimo Articulation”. A reader left me a comment, which rocked my world today. Then I did some reading and felt worse. Sigh.
Did you know that the term Eskimo is considered offensive in Canada and Greenland? I didn’t. But it is. While it is still considered a common term in the U.S. and other countries, I do not want to use terminology that could be hurtful to anyone, anywhere. If you are curious, I encourage you to read up on this topic. I read for about an hour about it. I came up with the conclusion that I wanted to remove the word from my activities.
I have updated this documents to reflect a change in wording and completely removed the word Eskimo from the documents. If you have already downloaded/purchased these, you can re-download the new document. The pics are changed in the posts and listings so you can see the changes. Basically I just replaced the word ‘Eskimo’ with ‘Arctic’.
I offer my sincerest apologies if I offended any other readers with this activity. It was certainly not done with ill intentions, but lack of knowledge. I learned a lot today, and for that I am thankful.
